- If you apply rain-x to your windshield monthly, during light rains you shouldn’t even need to turn on your wipers.
- If your car is ever stuck in snow or mud you can sometimes get out by lowering the tire pressure. Just be sure to pump the tires back up before driving long distances.
- It’s actually good to go out on the highway and floor your car. This cleans out the carbon deposits in the injectors. While in the short term this will decrease fuel economy, but in the long term it increases gas mileage. Just be sure not to exceed speed limits to much.
- Rotating your tires is something you don’t have to do but it will get you a few more miles out of your tires. First check your tires to see if they are rotational (an arrow on the side of the tire). If they are not rotational then rotate them front-to-back and also from side-to-side.
- Tire tread is very important and often overlooked. Your tread affects how the car handles in wet and dry conditions. You should always keep a close eye on your tread depth. To check tread depth grab a penny and place it upside down in the grooves of your tire. If you can see all of Lincoln’s head, it is time for new tires.
- When coming to a park in an automatic transmission car it is best to apply the emergency brake then shift the car into park. This reduces the stress in the transmission and puts the weight of the car on the brakes which are made to handle the weight of th whole car.
- With the summer heat soon approaching its time to pop up the hood and inspect all the hoses and belts. If any of your hoses or belts have cracks, frays, or any type of fluid on them, it is time to replace them. Even if you belt isn’t cracked it’s still a good thing to replace every 100,000 miles.
- Radiators are what keep your car running cool and prevent overheating. You should check your radiator coolant level when the engine is cold. The coolant used in radiators should be mixed…half antifreeze and half distilled water.
- Your car’s oil is the single most important thing in your car. The oil lubricates all your internal engine parts. if you car is low on oil this can lead to extremely costly repairs. to check your oil, run your car for about 30 seconds then shut it off. Pop the hood and look for a dipstick (usually yellow). Remove the dipstick and find the line where the oil is on the dipstick. Use the picture as a reference. the oil should be within the hash marks, or near the very to line.
- Ever wonder what kind of gas mileage your car gets? When you fill up reset you odometer(tracks how many miles you go), then the next time you fill up take the number on the odometer and divide it by how many gallons of gas you put into the car.
